Internship | Quantum-enhanced scanning probe microscopy

In recent years, advancements in quantum mechanics and its surrounding technologies have enabled us to control the individual quantum states at microscopic levels. Furthermore, these advancements have helped develop a new generation of sensors with unparalleled sensitivity, precision, and resolution: the Quantum Sensors.At TNO, we are developing several quantum sensing technologies with short and mid-term impacts in industry. Having access to a vast pool of expertise, our focus is to bring the current quantum technologies to a suitable level for industrial applications.

What will be your role?

You will be working in a team developing quantum-enhanced scanning probe microscopes (QSPM). Building on TNO's heritage and experience in atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers in diamond, we are developing a new generation of instruments to test applications for our customers. In this project, you will be responsible of contributing to further developing the QSPM system and demonstrating its capabilities. In particular, you will characterize some aspects of the system's performance and implement modifications to improve it. These activities will be done in collaboration with experts from several TNO departments with various expertise.

What we expect from you

We are looking for a motivated master's student in the last phase of their study in physics, chemistry, materials science, or electrical engineering with a background in quantum mechanics. You have experience working in a laboratory and are pro-active, pragmatic, and focused on making things work. Familiarity with programming, especially in Python, is a plus.
