Internship/Master thesis on the vulnerabilities of GNSS signals – Space Unit

Position Description
Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) using signals from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) like the United States (US) Global Positioning System (GPS) and the emerging European GNSS Galileo are used for a wide range of applications: road, aviation, rail, maritime, finance, security, science, etc. However, these signals can be easily jammed and/or spoofed, causing damages to the applications. Your day-to-day activities
CGI Netherlands is developing its own secure GNSS (snapshot) receiver within the Secure Tracking Services (S-TrackS) team. Snapshot receivers represent a new concept in terms of receiver technology. The main objective of this solution is to offer reliable and secure PNT information with an increased resilience against jamming and spoofing.
In this context, CGI Netherlands is proposing an internship for a highly motivated candidate to test and validate the robustness of the GNSS signals and perform threat analysis on RF level (e.g., continuous wave signals, chirp signals). For this, the CGI GNSS Simulator would need to be updated to generate the new signals (over the cable) in order to enable safe testing and validation. CGI Netherlands will make available all the necessary hardware (signal recorders, SDR, antennas, etc.) and software tools (GNSS Signal Simulator) required to carry the tasks to the selected candidate.
CGI Netherlands is offering a monthly compensation according to its internal regulations (≈ 500 euros/month). The internship is foreseen to last approximately 6 months.
Your mission will address the following points related to GNSS signal processing and the associated vulnerabilities :
• Understanding the principles of PNT using GNSS technologies and signals,
• State of the art analysis of the vulnerabilities associated to GNSS signals,
• State of the art analysis of the mathematical models of the signals,
• Design and implementation of the selected signals in the CGI GNSS Simulator,
• Testing and validation of the implemented signals against the CGI secure receiver,
• Written and oral reports.

Skills and competencies to be successful
You have a broad interest in technology and development of high tech systems and you like to work and develop outside your knowledge area. We offer an internship opportunity to a candidate with a strong background in:
• Electrical, communications, computer science or related field of engineering,
• Signal theory and statistical signal processing,
• Programming in C/C++.
