What will be your role?

Experimental project addressing the impact of on-demand supply of gas by gas wells.

In the coming decades the energy mix will change dramatically, thereby reducing the contribution of fossil fuels. On the other hand, the contribution of fossil fuels (especially natural gas) will remain important, as it is an energy source that is more constantly available (i.e. wind, solar and tidal energy have fluctuating availability). If natural gas is to fill in the gaps when renewable energy supply is low, the gas supply should operate on demand.
Such a condition may be challenging for mature wet gas wells, of which there are many in use. The operation of a wet gas well is characterized by the production of gas and liquids. These liquids may come from the reservoir itself and/or arise from a condensation process.

In case the reservoir pressure is high, the production flow rates are high as well, and the liquids are produced to surface easily. However, when reservoir pressures decline (i.e. when the reservoir becomes mature) the flow rates decrease, resulting in a decreased ability to transport the liquids to the surface. At low reservoir pressures, the momentum of the gas is not sufficient to produce large amount of liquids, such that these liquids accumulate at the bottom of the well, eventually making all gas production impossible.
There are several techniques to deal with such challenges (e.g. by using foamers or operating intermittently), although they do not resolve the origin. Perhaps more important, these techniques may become less suitable if the wells are to be operated on demand, making the availability of the wells not constant any more. When operating on demand, the wells may be shut-in/restarted at instances that are not optimal in terms of production, possibly resulting in a reduced production or earlier end-of-life.

In this experimental project the performance of one of these techniques (foamer injection) will be studied, focusing on the behaviour during startup of a well that may not be in optimal condition. The project will make use of an existing and unique setup combining a well and reservoir (scaled). Flow dynamics are introduced by the flow system itself, but can also be triggered by open/closing system valves. In this project, a comparison will be made of the well-reservoir performance with and without foamer injection, and for various injection parameters (dosage, timing, etc.).
